About the artist
American singer and guitarist, born 8 January 1935 in East Tupelo, Mississippi, USA; died 16 August 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA (aged 42).
Elvis is one of the most celebrated and influential icons of the 20th century, pivotal to the development and globalisation of the rock ‘n’ roll sound. His 1956 debut self-titled album became the first rock ‘n’ roll album to sell over 1 million copies. Commercially he is a success in many genres including rock 'n' roll, pop, country, gospel and credited as one of the originators of rockabilly music. Presley is the best-selling solo artist in music history, with over 1 billion sales as recognised by Guinness World Records. Awards/accolades include three Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the young age of 36. He was inducted into four different hall of fame organisations: rock & roll, country, rockabilly and gospel.
Appearing on Milton Berle’s show—April 3, 1956—was the explosion; his performance on The Ed Sullivan Show—September 9, 1956—cemented him as an unstoppable superstar and the rest is history.
In addition to his music career, Elvis was also a prominent actor and starred in 31 movies most notably Jailhouse Rock (1957), King Creole (1958), Blue Hawaii (1961), and Viva Las Vegas (1964).
Elvis is universally referred to as "The King of Rock and Roll" or simply, "The King".
